On Sunday 10 July 2022, Deakin’s third party (SaaS based) SMS gateway service was compromised. Whilst the impact was sensationalised in the media, the breach did expose contact information of almost 47,000 students, and a malicious SMS was sent to almost 10,000 students. Deakin were able to identify the breach quickly and initiated an effective and prompt incident response.
